René François Ghislain Magritte (21 November 1898 – 15 August 1967) was a Belgian surrealist artist. He became well known for a number of witty and thought-provoking images. His work challenges observers’ preconditioned perceptions of reality.
Magritte’s work frequently displays a juxtaposition of ordinary objects in an unusual context, giving new meanings to familiar things. His most famous work of art is The Treachery of Images (La trahison des images), which shows a pipe and the text “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” (“This is not a pipe”). This seems a contradiction till you realize that it is actually true: the painting is not a pipe, it is an image of a pipe.
Surrealistic art covers the whole arena from meticulously realistic as in Magritte’s case, to the free flowing style of Miro. Because Magritte is so very realistic, his surrealistic touches make his art funny and philosophical.
